Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo

Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, and is affiliated with the Program in American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. She is author of Gendered Transitions: Mexican Experiences of Immigration (University of California Press, 1994). That book, based on interviews and ethnographic research, examines how gender relations in Mexican immigrant families are often challenged, contested and reconstituted through migration. Hondagneu-Sotelo is also editor or co-editor of Challenging Fronteras: Structuring Latina and Latino Lives in the U.S. (Routledge 1997), Gender Through the Prism of Difference (Allyn and Bacon, 1997, 2000), and Gender and Contemporary U.S. Immigration (in press, University of California Press 2003). Her most recent book is Domestica: Immigrant Workers Cleaning and Caring in the Shadows of Affluence (University of California Press, 2001), and is based on research conducted with Latina immigrant women who work as house cleaners and nannies in Los Angeles, and the women who employ them. Domestica received the 2002 Distinguished Scholarship Award from the Pacific Sociological Association.
