Stacy Smith

Stacy SmithStacy Smith joins the USC Annenberg Faculty from Michigan State University, where she was an Assistant Professor of Communication from 1999 to 2003. She completed her doctorate in Communication at UC Santa Barbara in 1999. Her research focuses on developmental differences in children’s reactions to mass media, with a particular interest in youngsters” responses to violence in the news. She has received two “top paper awards” from the International Communication Association’s Instructional-Developmental Division for her news-based research as well as the “Outstanding Dissertation Award” in 1999 from the same division of ICA. Dr. Smith has written nearly 40 journal articles and book chapters on content patterns and effects of the media on youth. Funded by See Jane, she is currently working on quantifying gender portrayals in films and television programs popular with youth.
