Carey Drayton

Carey DraytonChief Carey Drayton has worked in campus law enforcement since 1979. His career in campus law enforcement began as a student police officer at the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Several months after graduation his appointment as the departments’ fifth Police Chief at age 26 was announced.

Chief Drayton’s extensive knowledge of the campus law enforcement profession has been developed through a variety of positions at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, George Washington University Police Department, the University of Oregon Department of Public Safety and the Florida State University Police Department. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, has professional certificates in a variety of law enforcement and public safety topics, and he is a graduate of the 159th Session of the FBI National Academy.

“The campus law enforcement and public safety environment is a unique opportunity to support the mission of the university and enhance the experience of the student by providing a secure environment developed for their social, cultural and educational needs,” according to the Chief. He has brought to USC “CAPPST” – Communication, Accountability, Professionalism, Partnerships, Suppression and Technology. This is the formula the DPS staff uses to carry out the mission and purpose of the Department of Public Safety.

Chief Drayton has been the Executive Director/Chief of Public Safety since August of 2006, first serving the USC community as the Deputy Chief in November of 2005 and the acting Executive Director/Chief of Public Safety in January of 2006. “It is exciting to be a part of the Trojan Family and I hope you will share ideas to improve the safety and security of our community; FIGHT ON!”
