Peter Nosco

Peter NoscoPeter Nosco was born in New York, did his undergraduate work at Columbia, and has graduate degrees from Cambridge University and Columbia University. He has also done graduate and post-doctoral work at the University of Tokyo.

A specialist in the intellectual and social history of early modern Japan, Peter is probably best known for his edited volume Confucianism and Tokugawa Culture, and his book Remembering Paradise: Nativism and Nostalgia in 18th-century Japan, which was recently translated into Japanese.

The recipient of three separate Fulbright awards, Peter’s first full-time teaching position was at St. John’s University in New York, and he has also had visiting appointments at the University of Maryland, Waseda University in Tokyo, and UCLA.

Peter has taught at USC since 1986 and has received both teaching and research awards from the University. He is currently President for one year of the Academic Senate.
